In Fidelity mode, the game runs at 4K resolution with full instantoto raytracing on display. In layman’s terms, that means sexy clouds and lighting effects reflecting off surfaces in real time. That fidelity takes a minor hit in Performance mode, which dials back the glam for a steadier framerate, which would normally be the preferred method for a game that requires a certain level of speed. As a sequel in a spectacular series, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is both blessed and cursed.

The beginning of the game’s third act is arguably the most fun part of the game, as players take control of Venom/ Harry Osborn as he fights out of the Oscorp laboratory. Jim Pirri and Tony Todd join the cast as the voices of Kraven and Venom, respectively. Ultimate is the highest level of difficulty, in which enemy HP, damage, and stealth awareness are all at their highest. And sure, more of what came before does mean that Spider-Man 2 retreads less successful ground, like the first game’s buzz-killing science puzzles. However, the good far outweighs the bad, and a few new gameplay mechanics freshen up aspects of both traversal and combat. Altogether, it’s a great game and one well worth seeing all the way through from its bombastic beginning to its emotional end. [Spoiler warning] One particular side quest that illustrates this best is a small one. Tasked with finding a missing grandfather, players must track the man across Brooklyn at the behest of his granddaughter and caretaker. It culminates not in an action set piece, but a quiet moment where Miles sits with an elder battling dementia, ruminating in Prospect Park at the place he proposed to his late wife.

Following the conclusions of their respective solo adventures they’re now a tight-knit crime-fighting duo, but both are predictably still struggling to juggle their superhero callings with their personal responsibilities. It’s hard not to feel, though, that Peter’s inability to hold down a job or progress his relationship with MJ feels a little higher stakes than Miles… procrastinating over his college application? The result is a cinematic but messy experience that not only still bears all the same flaws as its predecessor, but in many areas—particularly the storytelling—feels like a step backwards.

Its stellar action gameplay, beautiful score, phenomenal setpieces and amazing narrative have helped it stand out as one of the best games to release in 2023. While it feels a bit poorly paced compared to Marvel’s Spider-Man, the game is still an amazing experience filled with some of the most enjoyable missions in any open-world game ever. Spider-Men Peter Parker and Miles Morales face the ultimate test of strength inside and outside the mask as they fight to save the city, each other and the ones they love, from the monstrous Venom and the dangerous new symbiote threat.

Spider-Man defeats each of the villains and fights Doctor Octopus for the antidote to Devil’s Breath, claiming victory after a bitter battle where Octavius revealed he knew Peter was Spider-Man all along.
