It’s hands-down the best Spider-Man game I’ve ever played, and a strong contender for the best game of a stellar release year. This is all essential given that, from a mechanical standpoint, there’s almost nothing very new here. The 2018 game famously lifted wholesale the fluid combat mechanics of the other big superhero series, Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy, trading in Batman’s billionaire kit for webbing.

Both Peter and Miles retain their own unique way of swinging and flipping through the city, replete with a collectible wardrobe of suits that sent this reviewer to the game’s photo mode for hours. Spider-Man 2 features an engaging superhero story full of twists and turns, brand-new symbiote powers to master as Peter Parker, and tons of incredible fights. It all takes place in a gorgeously-rendered open world New York City that, despite the odd graphical hiccup and clipping here and there, looks as good if not better on PC as it does on PS5. The animations are smooth, the combat is fast-paced and exciting, and the web-swinging exploration is top-notch.

Venom also appeared for a brief moment in the reveal trailer, and again in the more recent Story Trailer too. And while we know Peter will be able to wield Symbiote powers at some stage, there’s no telling if Venom himself will eventually join forces with the spidey duo, perhaps uniting against the common threat of Kraven The Hunter. Obviously, it wouldn’t be a Spider-Man game without the man of the hour, Peter Parker. Players will reprise the role of Spidey in Insomniac’s sequel, stepping into the shoes of the friendly neighborhood hero – though he won’t be alone. We join Miles at this exact point in his life, with family ties straining, friendships facing fresh challenges, and life decisions of genuine importance being posed for the first time. Actor Nadji Jeter displays all the range needed for the role, continuing to excel as a younger Spider-Man maturing before our eyes. He’s in his early twenties so has already navigated the difficult years that Miles finds himself in, but thanks to the symbiote suit, he’s working his way through yet more bodily changes. Obviously, what you take away from the story and its diverse cast of characters will be unique to you. On the surface, it’s another thrilling superhero story packed full of surprises, cameos, and Easter eggs – but there are deeper meanings to be found here, too. Overall, there’s slightly less emphasis on stealth encounters this time than in either Spider-Man or Miles Morales.

Spider-Man 2 is a fantastic game that is typically difficult to find fault with, so it’s a shame that the PC version has such serious issues at launch. With 2023’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games delivered yet another pulse-pounding superhero adventure, one that built on the foundation laid by the beloved 2018 game and took everything to the next level. Spider-Man 2 is still one of the best superhero games you can play, but it’s best to stick with the PS5 version over the PC port for now. At the center of the plot are the relationships of the heroes with characters from their surroundings, against the backdrop of typical superhero routine and important socio-social issues. The multilayered narrative spans a long period of game time, allowing for the inclusion of many events and characters at the expense of depth in their development.
